Marchelle McKenzie is the owner and chef of Butter and Spice Bakeshop, a gourmet bakery that specializes in fudgy brownies. Marchelle originally downloaded TikTok for entertainment. In 2021, she noticed a surge in videos from experts posting content in their fields. With the help of her sister, she got to work creating day-in-the-life videos about her baking business.

Among the swarm of customers who showed up was a producer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). This led Marchelle to produce and film three of her own recipes for Christmas with CBC Life – an opportunity made possible by her presence on TikTok.

Before TikTok, we were glamourizing celebrities, and it wasn’t relatable. But we liked them because they were so unattainable. Now, the way people are viewing stardom is about how relatable you are to the people watching,” says Marchelle. She values that TikTok is openly available and accessible: “On TikTok, anybody can show up just as they are and still have the tools. It’s almost like giving the underdog a chance.
