In 2019, Tina Nguyen made a special over-size scrunchie Christmas gift for her cousin, using fabric from an old shirt. Her cousin shared it on social media, immediately sparking attention from others. Just a few weeks later, Tina was contacted by Vitality Beauty Co, a salon in Thunder Bay, Ontario, who wanted to stock her scrunchies in-store. And so, the XXL scrunchie – and XXL & CO – was born.

From her parents’ front coat closet to now operating out of a 4,000 square foot warehouse – Tina’s business has truly blossomed. TikTok has unlocked many new opportunities for her, including an appearance on Dragon’s Den in 2023. “I totally wouldn’t have gotten on the show if the producer didn’t email me – she said that she watched me on TikTok. It’s crazy what opportunities have happened for me just because of posting.”
Every week, Tina hosts a special program on her TikTok account called, “Small Business Sunday,” featuring a new small business: “I remember what it was like when I started out,” she explains. TikTok has changed the way Tina thinks about her business and future possibilities. Because of the community and customer base she has cultivated, she feels confident about new endeavours, bringing her followers along for the journey.
